Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
Hi, I have purchased the Toyota Prius™ Gen2 inverter controller:
https://openinverter.org/shop/index.php ... duct_id=63
I have Prius Gen 2 inverter and Gen 2 transaxle/gearbox.
I am now in the process of getting my first spin.
In this guide:
https://openinverter.org/wiki/Toyota_Pr ... Controller
It says:
"Step 9 : Web Interface Basic parameters ( stm32_sine. bin) set up - to confirm PWM outputs : Full boost (curki= 20000 min) with 12v supply, default forward, ampnom @ 70%, and fslipspnt @1 Hz. Select - "Start Inverter in Manual Mode" Confirm flashing lights."
My problem is that I don't have ampnom or fslipspnt parameters. Under "Testing" I have manualiq and manualid. All the guides I find talk about ampnom and fslipspnt. I am not sure what to do.
Under version it says "version 5.14.R-foc".
This is all new stuff for me, challenging to understand everything, but I am doing my best.
I have connected all the wires 19-27 on the open inverter ECU.

How can I get a test spin on my setup?

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
I uploaded a new parameter file from here:
https://github.com/jsphuebner/stm32-sine/releases
So right now I have version 5.27.R-sine and now I have the fslipspnt and ampnom parameters, but still nothing happens when I put in values there.
Must I change more parameters or connect more wires to get my motor spinning?

Do you have the 55watt light bulbs set up and getting any signal when they are in the delta connection setup as per the wiki link?

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
I tried with the MG1 motor, didn't get any voltage to the MG2 output. Here are some pictures of my setup, 3 lead acid batteries in series with a 230v lightbulb that never lights up, but I could read 36v at the rails, slowly declining when batteries are disconnect so I would guess that capacitors was charged.
Forgot to mention that I did put something in the safety thing for the lid, so it's not that.

Is there a way you can make up a light bulb setup as per download/file.php?id=4273&mode=view?
Let's focus on getting signals out of MG2

I can attempt the lightbulb setup, just to clarify I have always used the MG2 output, I just used MG1 motor since it doesn't have a barking break that can interfere.RetroZero wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 6:23 am Is there a way you can make up a light bulb setup as per download/file.php?id=4273&mode=view?

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
I have the lightbulbs in delta configuration and started the inverter but I have no light. There is only one 12v battery as HV now.
12.6V at the rails in the inverter.

Going backthrough some of my threads - So connected 2 independant 12 volt supplies - Inverter 'High voltage' and Adapter Board 'Low voltage'
Direction parameter in Permanent Forward, MSDN to Main 12 volt contacter, fslipspnt - 11, ampnom - 75%, and Run Inverter in Manual Mode - Motor spinning - Hope this helps

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
I'd strip down your setup to just the bare essentials, to make sure it works. Get rid of the contactors, etc.
When in manual mode it overrides those anyways.
Keep the "HV" low if you're not using lightbulbs. Mine spun just fine on a 12v battery.
I'm not as (at all) familiar with the openinverter Gen2 board, but I'm moderately familiar with the Sine interface and the inverter itself.
At some point you can scope the lines (or a poor man's version, just measure the voltage).
I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting from or I'd try to be of more use.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
I have the same setup regarding the 12 supply, 12v car battery as HV, 12v variable power supply for the low voltage.RetroZero wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 8:28 pm Going backthrough some of my threads - So connected 2 independant 12 volt supplies - Inverter 'High voltage' and Adapter Board 'Low voltage'

I tried changing the direction parameter to default forward.
I tried with different values with fslipspnt & ampnom.
I don't have any contactors.
I don't think I can strip my setup down anymore I already have.MattsAwesomeStuff wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 10:44 pm I'd strip down your setup to just the bare essentials, to make sure it works. Get rid of the contactors, etc.

I have lightbulbs as the "motor" in delta configuration, tried with motor before but no difference. Also a 240v lightbulb from 12v HW in series with inverter.
I have tried several times measuring the voltage from the output of MG2 with a multimeter, but it's always 0.
I double-checked all my wires from the PCB to the inverter, they are all correct. All pins going to inverter has a cable, pins looks fine, they are in the correct place according to the wiki.
My inverter seems dead, the only life sign I have ever seen from it is that the capacitors takes a charge, if I plug in the 12v HW without a lamp in series I do get sparks.
The only thing I have done to the inverter is to remove the cover, connect my connectors and the HW cables. There are loose wires in it that the scrapyard unplugged. Those seem to be to unrelated stuff anyway, like the dc-dc & ac compressor.
I can't see any signs of damage or brunt components. There was nothing stated by the scrapyard about the inverter being in bad condition or not working.
I guess I could buy another PCB and Prius inverter and test those, but I am not eager to do that.
Thank you for the responses and the ideas.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
can you download http://192.168.4.1/cmd?cmd=json and upload here as a text file? All that while attempting to light up the bulbs.
I'm assuming you have MSDN (pin 25, for MG2) or GSDN (pin 20, for MG1) connected to 12V? What's the current draw of the idle inverter on the 2-pole power inlet next to the 32 pole control inlet?

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
After writing my last post, it does sound like the lid switch is the issue. I took a closer look at it. 2 cables goes from it, red and black, and the red one goes to a connector that is not connected to anything. The first picture is a screenshot from a video from Damien Maguire, the second picture is my inverter. Should this red wire have + LW or + HW? I would guess LW (12v) but I am not sure, the black cable goes down and is hard to follow without taking stuff apart.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
The lid switch is optional. When the lid is closed it just connects the case GND to the red wire. So if you expect to get GND from the red wire, two preconditions must be met: case grounded and lid switch closed.
Normally while bench testing you don't run anything via this red wire.

The 2-pole power inlet next to the 32 pole control inlet is taking 0-0.01A
With inverter running and ampnom @ 70%, and fslipspnt @1 Hz. Now I am ignoring the lid switch if doesn't matter.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
Can't really read the values, except Boost is at 1700. Should be 20000-30000

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
That is true, I changed it to 20000 but no difference.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin [SOLVED]
Good news, everyone, I have spin!
Minimum settings needed for spin or lights from default (version 5.27.R-sine) are the following:
0 boost 20000
15 dirmode DefaultForward
85 fslipspnt 1
86 ampnom 70
There was an issue with low voltage (12v) supply to the inverter for me, when I fixed it the power draw went up to 1,2A for the inverter and Openinverter PCB together.
But still the lights wouldn't light up, once I changed dirmode to DefaultForward I could hear noise from the inverter, first real life sign it has made for me, then I knew I was getting close. The "high voltage" (12v feed) was 1v at the rails, so I put a 5A fuse in parallel with the 230v lightbulb, then I got lights blinking.
When it tried the MG1 motor the 5A fuse blew, but with a 25A fuse everything worked great, had to increase the fslipspnt to 10 to get smooth rotation of MG1, MG2 doesn't want to rotate because of the parking break I would guess.
Thanks for the input from everyone who posted on my thread, it would have been even harder without help.
I hope this helps someone else trying to get their first spin.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
I never really figured out what fixed the problem (or caused it the second time, or re-fixed it), but I had my suspicions it was something to do with this too.
Also, the boost. IIRC whatever instructions I was following didn't tell me to crank the boost, and that was essential to getting it to do anything.

Re: Prius Gen 2 inverter with Gen 2 transaxle no test spin
That boost should be proportional to the HV voltage. If you have 120vdc you need 10x less boost to move motor than at 12v. Still i recommend at least 24vdc for testing with inverter. I need to use 48v since internal logic of GM Volt inverter is awake then...Bagheera wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 6:19 pm Good news, everyone, I have spin!

I also remember from early attempts with acim motors in v/hz mode i would have to set ampnom at 75% because voltage boost would require some amps to start the field from 0.

Hey guys. In so glad I found this post.
I'm running on version 5.35. R-sine and i've put the setting bagheera listed but for me still nothing. Is there something I'm missing out on, like other settings that I need to still put in.
For example, I'm running on 70v DC for my high voltage input. Do I need to change settings for ucdnom to 70dc under motor category and udclim under inverter.
Please help me out
