Hi all, new here. I’d very much like to convert some sort of van with eBay Tesla battery and motor which it seems can he had for not too much money. Can anyone advise at all if I did the work myself, and it was to a high enough standard, would insurance me possible? Would I need the work assessed?

No insurance inspection for me - I’m with Sterling. Not heard of anyone needing one.
But you will need a DVLA inspection - have a search here to read up on that process.

I just got off the phone with Howdens on renewing my *whispers* currently ICE'd van. And asked about EV conversion. They said that the KGM underwriters would insure it on the same basis and price as Markerstudy (the other people to quote).
£672 with 10k miles, no driveway, fully comp and £400 voluntary excess with excess protection (+£50).
So good news.
Im also going to get a quote from Adrian flux and Brent Acre and see how they compare and if they're also offering EV conversion insurance.
Surprisingly, Adrian Flux wouldn't insure the van as an EV camper. I've gone with Howdens with KGM as the under writer as they are happy to insure it as a camper in conversion as well as an EV in conversion. Brent Acre wouldn't insure as an ICE anyway.
This all might change once we have a driveway as living close to one of the highest automotive crime/insurance fraud city's of the UK (Bradford) is probably pushing up premiums and scaring off insurers.
The next hurdle, convincing the council let me have a driveway (apparently as we have under 5m of space from the feont of the house to the path they dont typically allow it)....
