DC chargers go into 5% duty cycle, thus requesting digital communications instead of PWM.

Yes, and AC chargers have two possibilities: Either use a higher PWM ratio, which defines the allowed current, or apply 5% and announce in the high level communication (IP, TCP, V2GTP, EXI) during the negotiation of the charge parameters that they support AC.
