Hello All,

Long time lurker, like to start my conversion soon.

I have a classic BMW2002 with ongoing restoration ,which im hoping to convert to EV.

I have bought a Leaf EM57 motor only with resolver plug wiring loom, I dont have a invertor for it.

Will the Prius Gen 3 inverter with Damien's logic board drive the leaf motor ?

Will it give the same power output from a leaf inverter controller ?

I don't know the answer for sure...

I suspect the Prius Gen 3 inverter can drive anything you point it to. It has 3-phase power outputs and, you can make it spin anything that'll spin when you spin 3-phase power output.

But, I don't know anything about Leafs and if there might be some special situation there. My hunch is, no problems.

The Prius is hybrid which is an EV for short periods of time at moderately low power.
The Leaf is an EV full time with more power.

But, it looks like the Prius is so overbuilt that it shouldn't be a problem.

I think it would be simpler to use matched parts, Leaf with Leaf, and there are Leaf control boards and the same software available for them (the Open Inverter software).

The software for drive the leaf will be the same regardless of the power stage you use. you get the same signals. So yes it will drive it.

But how much power you get will be determined by how much power the power stage can handle.


The Prius inverters only except like 200v or something like that. and id not rated for very high power output(50kw or so). Tho there is evidence that I can push a lot more out of them, but we haven’t seen anyone use it for something over a longer period of time.

the easiest solution would’ve to get a leaf inverter (assuming it’s a gen 2) and get the leaf kit or damiens can bus controller. You’ll then have a water tight and seals system that plugs right in. it’s clean, and powerful. We are seeing people get up to 140kw out of it.

If you bypass the DC-Dc converter, you should be able to get a lot more than 50kw out of the inverter. However, I believe the Prius gen 3 inverter cant put out as many amps as the leaf inverter, but can handle more volts (~400V for lead and ~650V for Prius). This means the motor will make lower torque with a Prius inverter, but can make more top end power with the higher voltage (assuming you configure a higher voltage battery).

If you parallel the outputs of MG1 and MG2 inverters, you may be able to match the leaf inverter or possibly exceed it.

How do you bypass the DC to DC converter? It would be nice to simply remove it from the inverter. I imagine it wont work as intended if I up my voltage from 220V nominal to 440V nominal.

This is written out in detail on the forums somewhere, that, if I understood it well enough to explain to others, I was going to take and add to the wiki. But I never did, and had unanswered questions still.
