Plug and Charge Apparently Coming Next Year

According to Electrek, there has been movement to get all EVs in the US to Plug and Charge next year.

In my view, this is once again the EV industry misunderstanding skeptics complaints. They hear concern/difficulty starting a charge, and jump straight to plug-and-charge, when the real issue is that every f!@#$%ing station initiates a charge differently, and half use really crappy apps.

In my EV road trip shenanigans, I've probably stopped at hundreds of stations. All I want from stations is to give me the same experience I have at a gas station. Swipe a card, press a button, fueling begins - while I am covered from the elements, well lit, and food/restrooms available 24/7. Oh and fueling stations that are easy to pull up to regardless of fuel port location. None of the networks seem to be able to do this.

I agree, and think there needs to be some legislation put in that, at minimum, the stations must accept card payments.

Well, the article is a little bit too optimistic: "the ability for any EV to just plug in and start charging" sounds like any which is on the street today. But in fact, a lot of cars only support DIN or ISO15118:2013, and will never get an update to support a more recent version of the ISO, which is required for plug&charge. But nevertheless a step into the right direction.

I'm always hesitant to ask/advocate for legislation (regulatory capture, etc) but it is something I'm watching closely. There were concerns about networks excluding conversions, and wide spread use of plug and charge is one way to make that more likely. I tried to get SEMA Action Network to do something a couple years ago, but they really didn't care.

At some point, one of these networks is going to realize people really just want truck stops for EVs, and the rest will follow suit (hopefully).

Yeah Electrek tends to jump to conclusions / make grand declarations based on thin news.
