using a brilliant water analogy
here the big inlet pipe represent high voltage/high current, it has a spring loaded disc aka valve (the orange piece) closing and opening the flow
it is controlled by the smaller branch pipe, in other words requiring much lower voltage for control
small pressure or voltage applied to the Gate pin on the MOSFET, not enough to open the valve
lots of pressure or voltage applied to the Gate pin on the MOSFET, now enough to open the valve
