Model 3 rear seized axle stub

This week I encountered a problem. The original diff of a model 3 rear drive unit in a Jeep Wagoneer suddenly became a locked diff
I don't know what happened, but when I opened it up it showed that the motor side axle stub was seized in the sliding bearing. (I had to cut the flange of the stub to get it out)
The bearing on this side seems to be fine, but the bearing on the inverter side has some rough spots and it looks like it dug into the alu case a little bit.
There was no shim there, but there are shims on the motor and intermediate shafts. Does anyone know if there should always be a shim at the diff too? (We did open it up previously)
Plan is to put a different differential in, but I am not sure if this is then supposed to be shimmed and if there is a reason this happened which has to be fixed. Everything else in the unit seems fine.
Glad to hear if anyone had any experience like this
