Leaf cells shorted in 1st Gen module ?

I have a 1st Gen Leaf 500Wh module where it seems that one of the set of series cells are shorted.
When measuring between the main terminals it reports as 3.7V.
Between one terminal and center it measures resp 0V and 3.7V.

So it seems that one of the series cells are shorted.
Without opening the module I'm curious as what has happened.
Did the cells just got shorted or is it a safety feature ?

The Gen 2 modules have no 'safety feature' and i'm sure I've seen videos of people tearing into the Gen 1 sardine can.

Edit: here's my Gen 2 module teardown on DIY Electric;

I assume there's no safety feature either so that means the cells just got shorted.
So what will happen when I try to charge it until 8V could be interesting to find out.

I wouldn't charge the whole module if I were you. Maybe try a low-power charge of the shorted cell. If you bring the whole module to 8v you have a high possibility of spontaneous catastrophic disassembly.

And that's exactly the goal to achieve :-)

A low power charge wont help anyway because the cell is just 0,00 volt so it wont take any charge and will generate just heat from the applied charging current.

There is no internal protection mechanism, so if it's at 0V it's done. If you do charge it make sure to videotape :)

If you're planning to destructive test it, would be interesting to see if burying it in sand would be an effective fire protection method for stationary applications.
