About New Tesla Model 3 Battery Pack. 2170 Cell.

Post by Leo Max »

Well....
I got a 2019 Tela Model 3 battery.
It has 2 pcs 23S(31P) pack and 2 pcs 25S(31p) pack.
Right now I juest need 23S working is fine.
reted voltage: 23S x 3.6V=82.8V
high voltage:23S x 4.2V=96.6V
So I'm thinking can I just give it a 96V chager plus a 23s bms module let is work?
Charging current around 50 amps.
Output current around 160 amps for load.
Thank God! thank you!

Use this kind BMS board.
connect all the pin form 23S group to the bms.
Thank God! thank you!

I suggest one of these: https://www.lithiumbatterypcb.com/produ ... pack-copy/

With a simple microcontroller (Arduino or similar) you can communicate with this BMS and obtain individual cell voltages in case of a single cell failing.
I can share some code if you like, the communication protocol should be the same as the 16s BMS which I have.

I'm using 12 16s BMS modules from the same vendor in my Porsche conversion with a 96s2p system. So far they are working well, though I'm not driving yet.

Sounds great!!
Could you send me a picture to show the connection detail about the battery BMS please?
I'm in califonia too! Which city do you live in? Would you mind me to vist you?
Thank God! thank you!

Here's a beautifully annotated image:

I'm in the north bay area, napa county. We could probably meet up and discuss this once the shelter in place orders are over (if they are ever over).

I can help you with hardware and software to communicate with the BMS.
What charger are you planning on using?

I have not started to think about the type of charger.
Because I am now thinking about the feasibility of the whole plan.
The new Tesla model 3 battery looks like this.

25S x 3.6V = 90V
23S x 3.6V = 82.8V

I plan to use one of the 23S as a power wall for a solar system.
The most headache now is the choice of BMS.
The circuit board of this battery is what it looks like in the picture.

I was thinking if I removed the circuit board. Find the connection point corresponding to each "S". Connected to the BMS of 23S. Then connect a 96V 20 amp charger.
Thank God! thank you!

Yup, that should work great!

Here's a good charger for 96v - it can output 25A at that voltage when fed from 240vac.

I don't think this is complicated. If you believe that Tesla know most about their battery packs then wait for Damien to reverse engineer the BMS protocol and use the open source solution that's built on that knowledge. Conversely, if you believe a third party knows most about the Tesla battery then buy their BMS.

Thanks for your advice! I also look forward to Damian ’s solution. I now have a solar project and I need to come up with a solution immediately. I hope to provide customers with a very durable battery pack. That's why they have these stories.
Thank God! thank you!

Don't be under any illusion that the commercial BMS's are a panacea... I've seen several projects that are a total disaster where the supplier has walked away because the BMS doesn't perform as expected.

One of the reasons I like Tom's Simp BMS approach is because it reuses the existing OEM hardware 8-)

Just to add to that the aim with my M3 bms project is to use Tom's simpBMS as the the controller for model 3 packs or modules.

Wait what :o

Once you have your translator designed or want a hand with it let me know and I can look at what the communications are and how this would work with my base code.

Looks like Damian ’s BMS is not available?
What BMS can this battery use? I mean it can be bought.
