List of motor manufacturer
List of motor manufacturer
Hi all,
at the moment I'm searching for a motor, that will later power my VW Golf1 Cabrio.
For that, I want to have a list of motor manufacturer.
My choice will be an AC (asynchron) motor, but I want to list also all other variants (DC brushed, BLDC, reluctance, etc.) for it might help other interested people too.
So here's my list, but I also want to know your suggestions (I will add them to the list):
Fa. Fleck https://www.fleck-elektroauto.de/shop/elektromotoren/
Fa. Schwarz https://www.schwarz-elektromotoren.de/d ... autos.html
Fa. Heinzmann https://www.heinzmann-electric-motors.com/
Fa. Kostov Motors http://kostov-motors.com/
Fa. HPEVS www.hpevs.com
Fa. Netgain Motors www.go-ev.com
Fa. Agni Motors http://agnimotors.com/
Fa. Parker Motors https://ph.parker.com/de/en/electric-vehicle-motors
Fa. D&D Motor Systems https://ddmotorsystems.com/ElectricVehicles.php
Fa. AC-Propulsion http://www.acpropulsion.com/index.php/p ... ive-system
Fa. Linde https://www.linde-mh-emotion.com/de/Produkte/Antriebe/
Fa. Aradex https://www.aradex.de/de/produkte/elekt ... ectomotor/
Fa. Brusa https://www.brusa.biz/produkte/antrieb.html
Fa. Kräutler Elektromotoren http://www.kraeutler.at/ - not sure, if they have also motors for cars
Who knows more?
Of course, there are numbers of manufacturer of industrial motors, but - for what I know - they are not appropriate to be built into EVs.
Many thanks for your input,
Fabian.

Re: List of motor manufacturer
You missed Siemens

Personally I wouldn't use any of these motors today... OEM motors are available at a fraction of the cost and will be supported for many years

Edit: Here's a good example of the problem faced by 'old school' motor manufacturers

Can't agree more, and I think the quality of any OEM motor, is much higher.Kevin Sharpe wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 9:41 pm Personally I wouldn't use any of these motors today... OEM motors are available at a fraction of the cost and will be supported for many years![]()
Many of these motor manufacturers have low volumes and not build with the high-tech production methods as a Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen and so on.....
And one more thing reuse is better, for the environment to.

Re: List of motor manufacturer
I didn't miss Siemens or Aradex or Drivetek etc.
I just don't see any chance as an end customer to be able to buy them somewhere.
And I agree with the quality of an OEM motor.
But where do you get them from?
As an original spare part, they will be even more expensive, I guess.
Is there a reseller, that offers used drivetrain components from wrecked EVs?
I don't think you buy them from the bay, do you?
The other point: I want to use an AC (asynchron) motor with a battery voltage of 144V and power in the range of 30kW
Is there an OEM motor with these parameters?
Would be very interesting to know, how you chose OEM motors and where you can find them.

Re: List of motor manufacturer
This is Leaf motors in Norway, you can find same listing for other motors to.
I guess you can find similar in Germany.

Re: List of motor manufacturer
Well Tesla small drive design is 30kW continuous i belive

And why go for 144Vdc? What kind of voltage is that? It is just on the verge what you can get charges for LV.
I dont think proprietary devices like Meanwell PSUs will work well with it... they work quite fine with 360Vdc...
Your cables have to be thick and your motor will quickly overheat if pushed.
Fuses you can get cheap from forklifts though...
Is that voltage any safer than 120Vdc you get from forklift world?
ACIM are wonderfull machines But their control is a bit in the magic realm. I mean that even when you are sure you got the settings correct you found out your motor responds better with additional boost etc... so you are never trully done with settings.
Whereas with BLDC/PMSM i have experience i just setup some parameters and the thing drives really good off the bat. Even with proprietary controlers.
I dont want to slant AC machine, i just needed like 2 years to completely setup my Mazda motor and i know i am not completely done.

Re: List of motor manufacturer
OEM's sell motors as spare parts. Damien had a quote for the GS450H CVT used in BEXUS (here) for 1500 USD shipped direct from Lexus in Japan within 10 days. Obviously that's much more expensive than recycled parts from crashed vehicles but it's an option if you want to guarantee spares in 10 years time.
One other thing to consider is that our warehouse is full of motors and controllers from small manufacturers who went out of business or stopped developing products in the last 10 years. AZD, CODA, and the HPEVS oil cooled motors are just a few examples.

Re: List of motor manufacturer
This is an important point. A 144V battery negates DC rapid charging capability and forces you to use expensive chargers, DCDC, and other components from small companies.
I've just paid 100 euro for a Tesla PCS (10kW charger/dcdc)... how much will your 144V versions cost?

Re: List of motor manufacturer
You can buy them direct from Siemens or for a lower price from several online retailers;

Re: List of motor manufacturer
Yes i even made a car with 220Vdc and Leaf motor on transmission. This car can drive good. Motor can turn at 7000rpm with FW, but it just does not develop full potential. Car can get 150km/h with original transmission and i think it is capable of much more!!!

Re: List of motor manufacturer
Have to agree with Arber and Kevin here.
I have experimented with lower voltage ACIM motors to the extent that I even rewound one to a far lower voltage than original. I might use it on a motorbike or similar but ultimately using a OEM piece of kit is the way forward from both a time perspective and money. Be vigilant on websites and get
to know your local scrappies is my advice. Your day will come, so be ready.
Arber has also highlighted a hidden advantage of buying OEM, and that is that charging units off the shelf will more than likely work with them, but certainly not with obscure or out of the ordinary pieces of kit. You need to avoid sub-projects within a project as much as possible.
Regards
Stephen

Hm...
ACIM motor can apparently be found in the latest of BMW hybrids 225xe.

Maybe that would be a cost effective solution for you?
