I haven't got much money and I imagine people getting boards from JLC directly will have a good few spares...

Please save some money first then and after that buy one from Damien.
Or if someone sells you something cheaper, please donate the price difference to Damien (as much as possible) over time. The amount of value you get with the firmware he is offering open source is €€€.
