Do you know the reason for that? I thought electric motors were only limited by their thermal design or overheating. Why would the motor stop at 50kw?

Because power = speed x torque . Since the motor is high inductance it quickly needs high voltage to maintain torque. Torque is actually tremendous but only up to 1500 rpm or thereabouts. Then it drops so speed x torque never becomes very large

This was a recent drive using a Gen 3 Prius with welded power split.
The car is so much fun to drive but hits top speed at about 108 kmph.
Re: Newb Asks: Do we use the Prius motor or the Prius Plug-in one?
1. Shouldn't speed go from 0 upwards?
2. If it's fun at 30kw, imagine burning the rubber with Damien's dual motor board...
3. I guess the firmware is hard coded with 30kw limit by design. In the OEM design, rest of the power must be coming from from ICE. Damned Toyota!

Oh God no, it is a monstrosity (big and heavy and a nightmare to remove from the OEM vehicle) and I think it's the Gen 2 Prius style with no internal circus board, correct me if I am wrong so it can't be controlled with the Zombie VCU. I pulled it from a vehicle in this thread Junkyard Report: 2008 Lexus RX400h AWD and I think that Power Control Unit aka PCU as Toyota refers to the actual box/enclosure may actually have 4 inverters in it, assuming one is for the air conditioning.

based on these Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive Specifications I am leaning towards trying the Camry inverter with the 3rd Gen Prius transaxle in my 1984 Rabbit, that way there is no need to crack open the Prius inverter.0tik wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2026 12:03 am 1. Shouldn't speed go from 0 upwards?

Re: Newb Asks: Do we use the Prius motor or the Prius Plug-in one?
Would it makes sense to keep the dc-dc in line in these cases where the Prius transmission is used? It would mean limiting to 36kw(360v) or 40kw(400v) if the inductor is limited to 100a. It's a trade off to consider, potentially dropping down from 50kw at low speed to 36kw+ at all common driving speeds. I'm not sure what the inductors actual current limit is though, may be +/- 100a.
*Edit* or am I missing that it is inline in these can driven systems?
The gen 3 inverters commonly blow something in oem vehicles, dc-dc maybe? Might be why they're harder to find than gen 2.
Re: Newb Asks: Do we use the Prius motor or the Prius Plug-in one?
Take note of the "disputed" in this photo. Imo Camry is locked to dc-dc power limit too. You'll have to crack the Comms too as zombie is not supporting Camry inverter at the moment.Gregski wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2026 11:49 am based on these Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive Specifications I am leaning towards trying the Camry inverter with the 3rd Gen Prius transaxle in my 1984 Rabbit, that way there is no need to crack open the Prius inverter.

The Prius motor is mounted in a reverse position than standard due to space constraints in the Karmann Ghia hence the interesting data!0tik wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2026 12:03 am 1. Shouldn't speed go from 0 upwards?
