State of Charge 2024

Post by P.S.Mangelsdorf »

For anyone in North America that might be interested in attending; I have been asked to present at the State of Charge conference in July. The conference will be held in Denver, and is being held alongside Electrify Expo.

https://ohmontherange.org/SOC24/

My presentation will center around my Drag Week trip, with some information on my build. I'm still a long way from done writing my presentation, but as a teaser, the first slide will read as follows: "Disclaimer: None of Following Should be Considered Good Ideas." I won't have the '40 there (it's a long haul from North Carolina) but looking forward to seeing other builds. I've only seen one or two other EV builds in person, if you can believe that.

If you're going, let me know - I'd love to chat while we're there (and maybe hitch a ride from the hotel to the site).

Looking forward to meeting you! I am also going to SoC and presenting. I have been in '22 and '23 and really looking forward to '24 combined with Electrify Expo coming to Denver for the first time! It really is the premier event for EV conversions. I was blown away by the quality of presenters last year and learned a ton.

Well I can't guarantee anything will be learned from my presentation, but it should be at least entertaining.

State of Charge was this weekend, and overall it was a great conference! I really enjoyed meeting other people and actually seeing other conversion projects in person. There were a couple of really interesting presentations, including EVSwap on the Leaf VCU based swaps and Kevin Erickson on thermal management. I think my presentation was pretty well received too. I'm hoping to edit the video and release it on Youtube soon. I also learned that SCTA has recently revised their EV classification (from 3 unlimited weight classes to treating electric as fuel/engine type), which opens so many opportunities for land speed racing. The bug has bitten me once again; my next big build might end up as a land speed car.

There was a good assortment of builds present including (off the top of my head):
  • 2 Chevy Thriftmaster pickups (1947-53)
  • 2 1st gen Mustangs (1965-68)
  • R32 GTR
  • Nissan Pickup w/ Leaf (EVSwap)
  • Land Cruiser w/ Leaf (EVSwap)
  • Pontiac Fiero
  • Lotus Espirit
  • Corvair wagon
  • Plymouth Satellite
  • Cobra replica
  • Nissan minitruck Lemons race car w/ swappable battery packs
  • Ford F100
  • Suzuki Samurai
  • Jeep Wrangler

Electrify Expo Denver was also next door on Saturday, and SOC participants had free entry. I took the opportunity to test drive a few OEM EVs and it was a good learning experience. I drove:
Hyundai Ioniq 5N - terrible pedal mapping and too many settings/buttons, but quick and otherwise well sorted. The exhaust/shifting gimmick is interesting, but I'd need to have access to a good mountain road to really understand if it's fun. Their people didn't know enough about their own products.
Lucid Air Pure (base model) - exceptionally good car, but you can tell it's the slower one. Suspension is a cloud, but very well controlled. Perfect balance, handled rough bumps/RR tracks with ease. Off pedal regen ramped a bit too aggressively, especially when coming to a complete stop.
Ford F-150 Lightning - quick, great pedal mapping, still feels like an F-150. Suspension is good, but when it hits harsh bumps at speed, it still has the body on frame shake/shimmy/rattle. I understand why it's been so successful transitioning people into an EV truck, it's just an F150 that runs on electricity.
Rivian R1T Dual Motor - I really liked Rivian before, now I know they are the real deal. Exceptionally well sorted, great driving feel, very fast. Had a little bit of torque steer, but very minor. My favorite of those I tested, now I really want one. Plus their people seemed to be really interested and invested in their brand. I didn't like the HVAC controls being on the screen, but otherwise this is how you do a serious EV.

Oh, and I saw the Lucid drive unit at their booth. I want it. It is TINY and makes 600+Hp, and weights 163lbs. Photo below with a small water bottle I had on hand. That's the inverter, motor and gear box.

It was really great to meet you and see the other cars. The Skyline was my favorite, I can't believe he fit all that power and AWD in there.

Glad you liked my presentation! I really enjoyed yours, it is clear you are a die hard gearhead with the amount of dedication, blood, sweat and tears needed to complete Drag Week with ~70 miles range. You should absolutely go for land speed records! Hell I am tempted to run my land cruiser and at least set something. From the way the AmpRevolt guys talked if you can haul your EV to Bonneville you can likely find a class to set an all-new record in.

I seen your presentation on youtube and you talked about the Resolve guys working on VW ID3/4 ect integration. How far along with this are they? I have looked into what it would take to crack the components in the past and was deterred by the fact the Inverter works with the immobiliser system in the car.

Yeah for sure Isak mentioned those issues but they are working on it, and confident with enough time it'll be solved. The VW CCS plug and play charger kit will be out imminently, they are fully focused on that right now. It will work with Resolve-EV first and then any system that can use Orion BMS shortly after. Also VW battery support will come first before motor/inverter. To me the charger and battery possibilities are way more exciting than the motor anyway. Don't get me wrong, that much power would be nice :D

Be cool to see how much they can get to work. The VW MEB platform is being produced in quite a volume

My original plan for Shocking Chevy was a dual sport, drag and land speed, via a gearing change, but the build quality slipped and I'm not comfortable taking it up to those speeds. I have been thinking a lot about potential options for a land speed build; it's really my first love in racing.

Tom, where have you seen them on Youtube? I know some folks were recording, and I recorded my own, but if one's already up I'd like to take a look.
