how much power from gen 3 inverter with gen 2 components without battery upgrade?

Post by Huskte »

If you were to use all the components from gen2 leaf (incl 24kwh battery) but upgraded to the gen 3 inverter (either the full 160 kw inverter, or the 110kw with the upgrade board, when that's available) would you be able to get the full 160kw or would you be battery limited?

hope that makes sense. :)

I have a Leaf G3 160kw + Zombie VCU setup in my boat . its connected to two BMW phev 34ah packs in parallel. at full power it draws just under 500a (so 160+kw) on my modified code. the 'Limit' in my setup is definitely the battery as it is as small as I can get away with to keep the weight down for racing and the C rate is a challenge for it. the rig runs pretty much at full power for the duration of the short 6 mile races I can complete, 5 race laps plus an out and in lap @ 48 seconds a lap. the thermal load is significant and disposing of the heat from the stack and the battery has taken some time to work through as the inverter gets quite cross even though I have a lakes worth of coolant available. some commentators claim significantly more power out of the EM57, which Im sure is true for about 5 seconds in a drag race.

I am building a pack with new 70c cells to deliver the necessary and be able to control the footprint to suit my application and probably going to try a Tesla M3 rear in a new case as it has an oil cooled stator and rotor setup and may be more suitable...

The Leaf BMS in the battery will provide the power limits.
