I am in the process of converting a Nissan Pathfinder. The engine had timing chain issues so I thought it would be ideal for an electric conversion.
I am not sure what to do about the 4x4. Should I keep the gearbox and just put a motor onto the gearbox shaft, or possibly remove gearbox and drive shaft and use two motors connected to the diffs?
The two motors would probably allow me to use a BMW I3 battery and mount it under the chassis.
Keeping the gearbox and driveshaft would probably mean that I will need to make up a battery box for under the bonnet.
Decisions......
[WIP] Nissan Pathfinder 2009
Re: [WIP] Nissan Pathfinder 2009
This would be an awesome build!!!! I've converted a 96 Nissan D21 Pickup 4x4. Which direction you should go depends on how much fabrication you want to do. The easiest path forward would be to get one of the Brat Industries transmission adapters, a coupler, and a Nissan Leaf motor. I believe Brat Industries also offers a coupler that would allow you to use just the transfer case, but I'm not 100% sure. I might be able to guide you through any Nissan specific issues you may encounter.
Re: [WIP] Nissan Pathfinder 2009
Oh wow, have you got your build here on openinverter? Would be good to see it.
Yeah the Brat Industries stuff looks great, I'm in the UK though unfortunately. And I am trying to keep the costs as low as possible.
I have one Audi E-Tron motor so far, so I guess if I go down the route of 2 motors I would have to use the same motor.
My main worry is the Nissan ECU. I'm planning on using the Zombieverter for the VCU so hopefully it will all work out somehow!

No real effective way to connect the motors to the diffs.
you’ll need 8:1 or more reduction.
could do a didion axle in the rear, front is cv axles so custome axles, both with stock drive unit of choice.
Matting a leaf stack to the original gearbox is the simplest and quickest.shipping to uk is not that bad, reach out over email and I can get some quotes.
Or even just a leaf stack with the leaf gearbox and custom axles. Fwd, get it driving then a drive unit in the rear.
But if your on a budget… dual motor first build is…. Expensive and complicated

Yeah after doing a bit of resesarch the Nissan Leat stack on the original gearbox with the Zombieverter is definately the best way to go for me.Bratitude wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 1:56 pm No real effective way to connect the motors to the diffs.

Just read through it. Awsome build and awsome truck!
I think I will be using the Nissan Leaf stack too.
Have you used it off road at all?
Re: [WIP] Nissan Pathfinder 2009
The Leaf stack with the Zombieverter is a good choice! Once you wrap your head around the wiring and software its so much simpler than a ICE engine.
I have done a little bit of off-roading near my house to test it out, and the performance is so much better than the gas motor. The amount of throttle control you have in 4-high while rock climbing is so much better since you don't have to worry about stalling the motor. It is so much quieter too; so that you can enjoy the sound of nature around you instead of an insanely loud fan trying to keep the ICE engine cool.
