Can the Openinverter run permanent magnet motors?
Can the Openinverter run permanent magnet motors?
I understand that the Openinverter is based on 3 phase induction motors, but I haven't seen anything explicitly saying whether or not it can properly run a permanent magnet BLDC style motor, somewhat like the leafs. Or would I be barking up the wrong tree?

Leaf motor is not BLDC. It is PMSM, they are pretty look alike, but a bit different control type. Johanes actually built his car on leaf motor and power module. Damien's boards are designed for toyota/lexus power stages, and those are syncronous as well. So yes, open inverter is capable of operating syncronous motors, as well as induction and even DC ones. All you need is to chose apropriate type of software(FOC), and those are provided by Johanes.
