The UK government announced the budget last week including a new 3p per mile tax to be applied to EVs starting in 2028:
https://www.gov.uk/government/consultat ... -duty-eved
It seems this will apply to conversions the same as any other EV:
However I know for post 2001 cars the DVLA refuse to update the tax amount, they insist on using the emissions figures the car was first registered with which makes me wonder how they will decide to apply this new tax for those cars.

Presumably it will be on top of it. As this is in addition rather than in place of VED I thought.

Re: UK eVED tax, 3p per mile
Since is going to be recorded by MOT testers and MOT system can change fuel type I can't see them having much of an issue taxing a post 2001...
Wouldn't like to bet paying the tax being difficult because v5 says ice so computer say no
(as it will only effect dozens of people DVLA will probably not be arsed to be helpful)

I suspect you are both right; the DVLA will continue to refuse to recognise it as an EV for regular VED but suddenly will when it comes to eVED, which is infuriating.

I've been thinking about this and the phraseJacobsmess wrote: ↑Mon Dec 01, 2025 5:15 pm Presumably it will be on top of it. As this is in addition rather than in place of VED I thought.
If a car isn't registered as electric by the DVLA due to their own refusal to register it as such, how can they then enforce eVED on a car that doesn't display as EV on their own system. Have to say I don't have any legal training but this looks like a loophole to me. Otherwise paying between £35-£760 per year in VED and then paying 3p/mile on top of that is the government double dipping on tax revenue (well triple dipping as there's already tax on all electricity) and certainly should be challenged in court. All UK-registered EV cars will be in scope of eVED
