Tesla Model Y 3 front drive unit

Post by onegreenev »

I have a chance to pickup this: 17-24 Tesla Model Y 3 Engine Motor Front Drive Unit. I am wanting to either use it in my 62 Bug, 67 Bus or my 83 Transporter Single Cab. Just wanting to get input from all of you who have used Tesla Drive units to do a conversion. I have DC conversion experience with stock transmissions but not retrofitting a tesla.

Would this motor be a good motor to use and are there any things about it that would preclude using it? I don’t need 600hp worth of electric drive.

I can weld and make a cradle or set of mounts for any of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well other than Damien and gangs m3 drive unit replacement board… which is still very much In Testing, and currently still in development for the front units, there’s no other way to run the front units, as the are slaved to the rear units.

Thank. you for that information. I was unaware that they were controlled by the rear inverter. That is why they are so cheap then.
