GS 450H - Disassembling for just one motor?

Post by Tremelune »

I'm ruminating an MGB conversion, and it seems like a GS 450H gearbox would get rid of the most annoying aspect: mating the EV motor to the driving wheels without using a manual transmission or buying a pricey TorqueBox.

In the interest of saving weight and space, is it possible to separate the 450H gearbox to only use MG2? I couldn't find any teardown info anywhere...

Does anyone know what the torque output of MG1 and MG2 is or how much this thing weighs?

Interesting. Seems feasible if you need the space, but probably not worth the trouble otherwise unless it's definitely more power than the car can handle.

Have a look at the teardown technical documents, you can see that the oil passages pass between the front and mid housings, these would need to be addressed.

The mechanical oil pump is mounted to the power split device, this could be reused for cooling.

The surface that you are left with is not flat. The easiest solution is to cut the face of the front section down and re use it. Gut the power split device and remove MG1.

You won't save much weight. Weights are listed in the doc.

There shouldn't be any issues with the inverter code and lack of MG1, just remove the relevant lines of code.

ORNL tore the LS600h (identical from MG2 forwards) down for analysis. Looks like you can split the casing and use just MG2, you would have to deal with oil and coolant routing/blockoffs, and maybe a front bearing/support since this is part of the power split device on the GS.

The GS450h inverter and VCU won't work, it relies on speed feedback from both motors. Without MG1's resolver present, you're not going to be able to create the required data.

Plenty of the other projects on here would likely be suitable, however (maybe one of the Prius units).
