GS450h entire hybrid system transplant

Post by squoblat »

Evening all,

I've not seen any information on how the GS450h VCU would function with an engine still attached to the GS450h transmission. Essentially what I want to do is transplant the 3.5l v6 and the hybrid system into another car, then add battery capacity to open up some of the power available from the electric motor. I'm not concerned about engine management, that box is ticked a thousand times over. What I am wondering is whether what's available to control the GS450h motor/generator/inverter etc. is usable in its current form to make a more "performance" hybrid system?

I won't be able to lock MG1 obviously, as it will still have an engine attached, but is this a realistic aim? The other thing I've not seen much detail on is whether or not the e-cvt function would work with the VCU, as I'd still like to be able to switch to the fake gears on paddle shift mode too.

Essentially I'm looking to alleviate myself of enough ignorance to start asking the right questions and making some purchase decisions.

I am also planning this, and basically will be simply sending torque demands to the VCU, and handling everything else myself. The VCU is pretty much taking the place of the HVECU in the stock setup, so I don't see why this wouldn't be doable, just...there's lacking info at this moment unfortunately.

I can see torque demands being something simple to send to the VCU, the demands could be managed by the ECU. That would leave driving modes within the realm of the ECU as well, which would be preferable. For example, if I wanted to switch to all electric or program the hybrid motor/engine on-off related stuff, or using the 3 stage throttle pedal etc. Dialling in regen and the e-cvt/gears are the big hurdles I think.

I've got a bit of background in Arduino/Raspberry pi/STM32 boards but it's not great - definitely enough of a foundation to work with, I just have no idea where to start with these units when it comes to getting them to do this kind of thing.

You're limited by the boost converter's power rating.

The boost converter has been successfully bypassed in the electric only builds though, don't see that being an unresolvable issue using the entire drivetrain.
