For instance charging a BMW i3 battery which has 94 cells and voltage span of approx Min 253V Nominal 338V and max 390V.
As rectified mains is about 320V any charging circuit will need both boost and buck to cover a battery like this.
As far as I can tell the voltage converter in the Prius inverters is Boost in one direction and Buck in the other so can not do both as needed for charging a battery that spans rectified mains voltage.
So I am wondering if are there any other solutions out there implementing Prius inverter equipment or similar. Or maybe this has been covered in a corner of the forum I have not found yet?
The only thing I can think of is to use a second inverter converter to boost the mains voltage to above maximum battery charge voltage and then the first inverter converter to buck that down and control charge current and thus cover the complete voltage range of a larger battery.
An alternative would be to harvest the power components from a first Gen inverter and make a true Buck - Boost converter and have that as a separate charger.
