Retaining Combustion Engine?

Post by levilachapelle »

Hi,

I understand that these projects are for converting hybrid drivetrains into full electric vehicles. I am wondering if it is possible to retain the full hybrid system on say a gen 2 prius with control for the motors and battery regeneration using one of the open source boards while also retaining the combustion engine. The 1nz-fxe engine is actually a pretty capable engine for its size with some modifications (itbs, cam, standalone ecu) with some people being able to achieve up to 141whp. Basically what I'm wondering is if it would be possible to keep the 1nz-fxe and use a standalone ecu that could then be linked to an open inverter board to drive the electric motors. Additionally would it be possible to retain the stock prius battery with a setup like this?

Please let me know what you guys think and if there are any other better options for achieving this. Thanks  !!!

Well i see one major obstacle in MG motor speed limits. On Gen2 and Gen3 MG1 is limited by its speed and has to use ICE to fight its torque to lower the RPM and create more torque towards MG2 via the wheels. You can cause all sorts of mechanical mayhem if you run ICE out of sync with MGs...
What would be the actual application?

Transaxles like Volt/Ampera and Lexus would lend itself much better to operating with or withoutout ICE...
Maybe newer Prius Prime models which use different MG ratios...
