Re: Toyota RAV4 EV (2012-2014): Add CCS DCFC: HV Cable Routing

Looking at the OEM routing of the existing AC leads, they follow where the petrol fuel pipe and main breather line would route, were this a petrol vehicle: https://openinverter.org/forum/download/file.php?id=25204&mode=view Unlike in the petrol/diesel version though, the HV battery pack's side r...

Re: Toyota RAV4 EV (2012-2014): Add CCS DCFC: Charge Port

I won't be using any of the onboard logic. I'll use the nozzle lock solenoid, its status switch, and perhaps the LED funnel extension, but the rest won't be used. I cut traces around the lock status switch and added my own leads, drilling a hole right through the center of the PCB's logic connector,...

Re: Toyota RAV4 EV (2012-2014): Add CCS DCFC: Charge Port

I'm coming around to the notion of installing a NACS charge inlet for its smaller physical footprint and superior HV cable routing. I purchased a used Telsa Model S early Charge Port 1005612-00-G, and have disassembled it a bit. Tesla_NACS_Charge_Port_Model_S_1005612-00-x_24b.jpg With the LED funne...

From what I recall, it doesn't matter: it'll work either way. The PWM hits the circuit fine whether one side is ground, or the other.

Re: Open source CCS using AR7420

I have a used Chevy Bolt 2018 [ . . . ] my use-case is to put the pyPLC in EVSE mode and emulate the charger side and perform some of these use-cases: 1. close contactors on EV side 2. read SoC 3. put the EV in charge state 4. put the EV in (dis)charge state (more like discharge state and ability t...

Re: Open source CCS using AR7420

Yeah, that's the problem with complex community projects that run over time: you can't get today's gestalt, because it doesn't exist in one place. In general, the Wiki doesn't get updated, the FAQ is always two years out of date, and enthusiam waxes/wanes, people come and go. It's the rare project t...

Kinda related:

It's tricky to interrupt large DC currents, to effectively and reliably quench the plasma arc. Various magnetic and air movement techniques are used.

Oh, goody, another variant. It looks more-or-less like catphish's and one of mine: TL-PA4010_30b.jpg I think you can figure out the 1:1 correspondences for much of that, just visually. The bottom side, maybe not so much. Once the big stuff is removed (esp. the transformer), it likely doesn't matter ...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance

When you're installing a Speedi-Sleeve, it's to correct surface imperfections that would cause a seal to not work well. So I assume that the sleeve will not have great contact with the shaft, and will have the worst contact in exactly the area where you would want the most contact! I'm not saying th...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance

He also takes into account the slightly larger diameter and the limited length. He also has reservations about using Loctite bec...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance

Deciding to leave the retaining compound out isn't a great idea. The aluminum case expands much more than the steel in the bearing as they heat up. It can get loose / spin if you skip it. In fact, heating the case is the easy way to get stuck bearings out typically. To clarify again, Howard found w...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance

The air I asked about was to allow coolant to drain out. Meaning that trigger wheel void area is able to easily suck air in from above the coolant that you want to drain. If the water manifold is siliconed in, it likely can't get air in the dry side unless it shares a breather / passageway. The ass...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance

The thing I don't like about the trapped-moisture-between-lips-caused-rust-there theory is that there is a finite amount of oxygen that can be trapped, and rusting should cease once that oxygen has been depleted by . . . oxidation. The amount of rust I see seems inconsistent with trapped moisture . ...

Re: NACS Inlet Port options

Nope, I have a GEN1 Model S OBC sitting on the shelf next to me, it's hardware-identical inside to my RAV4 EV's, I've had them both apart, and I bought a Model S GEN1 Rear HVJB to which the OBC attaches, and that's how it works: the OBC can handle AC or HVDC on its input. Operation is described in T...

Re: NACS Inlet Port options

you will need contractors to cut you AC lines when configured to DCFC In my case, I don't need to cut off AC when DCFC, because the Tesla OBCs always have tolerated HVDC at their AC input. That's the way the Model S (and our RAV4 EVs, which use the same OBC) do it. So when DCFC, just need to close ...

I just now purchased a 1005612-00-G (early Model S Charge Port), to hang in my garage alongside my Taycan port . . . sold the BMW i3 port last week.

I might collect the whole set, at this rate :(

I am now thinking along the lines of fab'ing a box around it for my project.

Re: NACS Inlet Port options

The earliest Model S (2012-early 2013) used SWCAN rather than PLC for comms, but that changed sometime around Tesla entering the EU market (Norway etc. in Aug2013; UK in Jun2014) and having to have CCS2 by their regulations, so quite a while ago. I *think* that SCs have been provisioned for CCS for ...

The Charge Port Door lock cable tab: Charge_Port_RAV4_EV_22b.jpg If I had one sage bit of advice here, it would be to try to keep your hand on the lock cable after turning it 90° and releasing it from the black retainer. Re: Toyota RAV4 EV (2012-2014): Add CCS DCFC: Inlet location

I removed the OEM J1772 charge inlet and took a good look at the layout of the Charge Port harness. The general run of this harness is: J1772 inlet at the LR Inside the LR wheel well, across the top and down the front. The cables are in a hard-plastic carrier here, and covered by a thin mud protecto...

NACS Inlet Port options

For a while there was considerable effort being made to adapt the Model 3 inlet port and controller for DCFC: https://openinverter.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1040 The landscape has changed, we have other CCS add-on options, but now in the US NACS is ascendant. If I wanted to install a NACS inlet, for...
