Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Yeah the 3 series packs seem to be 5 module. Five and seven series have 6.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
That's the pack I'm looking at. Waiting for my new conversion car to be delivered so I can measure up but I'm hoping to squeeze one in under the bonnet. Might be a little optimistic. Very grateful for anything you discover about them though.SciroccoEV wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 4:33 pm Most of the BMW hybrid packs seem to have 26Ah modules. I just picked up a 330E pack, which has five modules, rather than the six in the pack Damien acquired.
I unloaded it from the van and dismantled it this morning. Really nicely put together!
I weighed a module at 12.7Kg, which equates to something like 120Wh/Kg.
Guessing these will follow the same CAN message pattern as the 530 packs?
Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Does anyone have a module they could get some rough dimensions from?
I've been working on a project to refresh the hybrid system in a pair of Gen1 Honda Insights and so far Plan A has failed miserably and would probably end up setting fire to the car, plan B costs more than the car and after seeing Damien's video last night the BMW packs look almost perfect.
3 modules gives the right volts and no matter what battery/BMS combo was picked I have to do some coding to make it talk the special Honda protocols.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Including the bms module on the end they are aproximatley 400mm x 180mm x 110mm
Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Superb! Thanks!
They looked bigger in the video
But that is really quite compact for the capacity. Now to find a good cheap 5 or 7 series pack and start messing with the CAN.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I have two 330e packs and one 530e pack. They are all the same size as i understand it. The BMS modues are a diferent shape on the 530e so that they can fit into the space but I think they do the same job. The 530e pack also has an extra module.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I believe the 330e packs have 5 modules and 530e and 740e have 6. The bms modules can be unclipped and mounted on the top or sides.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Thanks all, these modules are PERFECT for my project. Now please stop buying them all up for a little bit to give me a chance

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Got my eye on one on ebay but the seller has just admitted it has been sat for almost a year. What is the likelihood of it being kaput after being sat for so long?

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Fairly low I'd say. Unlike the "professional" 3rd party bms systems their oem counterparts rarely kill the batteries in their care. It's almost like.....nah I won't say it...

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Ta! I would hope that something from Samsung would be good. I have had experience with a BMS where the voltage taps were effectively a giant resistor ladder to ground and would kill batteries in no time if left.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I took some photos of the BMS inside an x5 battery, which is the same stuff in yet another shape. If someone is interested about the markings on some of the chips, I have a larger set of photos where I tried to capture most of them (not easy because of goo) so just ask.
Also here's a video where I open the pack:

BMS module chips. Looks like it's using a TI BQ76PL455A-Q1 and is that Infineon an MCU?

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
The contactor box has an ST SPC56EL60L5 MCU and an ADUCM331 as a current shunt amplifier. Some Si8441BB for isolation.
And there's a LEAR warranty sticker on it.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
The BMS master has lots of goop and a ridiculously large Freescale chip underneath ("SC667333MLU1 OM14X XAA1708F"), and a Freescale HCS12 MCU on top with various little ICs.
Nothing says overengineered like a 176 pin mystery IC on a BMS master board!
EDIT: Oops, forgot the mystery IC photo
EDIT: Maybe it's an MCP5634M or similar

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Excellent photos and videos. Do you have the length of a module?
I know it was listed earlier in the thread but wondering the lengths, and I suppose the height, with the BMS modules in different locations.
Cheers

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I didn't measure very accurately but a module without BMS is something like 364*183*110mm and the BMS adds about 25mm to length or height depending where you install it.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Yeah we just need to figure out the master / slave can and use a simpbms. That's my plan anyway.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Do the CSC modules communicate via CAN or do they connect the BQ76PL455A chips together with the COMM/FAULT lines and then the BMS does the CAN interface? The wiring diag doesn't really give any clues.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
The slave boards communicate with the master via can at 500kbps. Thats the captures I just posted on github.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Ah cool, we don't need to reinvent the wheel by interfacing with the BQ chip. It just means there is a BMW special layer in the way
Has anyone worked out the full pinout of the 12 way CSC connector?
