BMW I8 project

Post by blackdog76 »

Hi, I have a 2016 I8 that I’m doing a front end collision repair on. The car is mostly put back together with both mechanical and structural parts but I can’t get it to charge. There is a message on the dash that says “unable to charge.” When I run diagnostics on ISTA there is no communication with the LIM module. I took apart the LIM and it looks fine to me. Wiring appears undamaged. My question is, should there be communication with the LIM module no matter what if it’s working properly or can some safety shutdown system (possibly from the collision) be blocking the power to the LIM? I replaced the pyro fuse on low voltage battery terminal and also shorted the secondary shut down connection in the terminal.

Ok, it was a fuse… The LIM seems to be communicating. Took me forever to find. The fuse block on the i8 is in a ridiculously awkward spot. Still won’t charge though. I’ll keep at it.

Interesting project, do you have compliance hoops to jump through, for structural fixes,? I assume it wasn't all cosmetic damage.

If i remember correctly- in i3 in case of a collision or crash BMS disables battery kinda permanently. Only specjalized BMW service software could unlock it.

Is that something that can be reset by opening up the battery or is this strictly a software issue, like something ISTA or Tool32 can do?

If after accident my bmw i8 can charge do I need to replace pyro fuse? My front driver seat belt is not working, so I think I need to send it for reset.

I’m bought my dream car and am
Broke. Any info would be useful. I was going to send in seat belt for reset to some eBay seller for $49…. Is seat belt in front single stage /
Double or triple?

What else needs to be replaced / reset ? Car drives but has lights on, drivetrain, gas tank warning.. what else should I look at ? I’m going to take into mechanic and have them reset lights but first I wanted to send in parts for repair / reset before I take to mechanic!

If your car is starting and driving, you don't need a pyro fuse. The seatbelt is 2 stage and mine cost me about 80 to rebuild.

Is there a way to upload photos without an image hosting site?

Yes, if on a phone, open the fill editor, then at the bottom is the "attachments" option to upload images direct. They can be a bit faulty IME but it works eventually.

So basically, what I'm being told is that the reason my car wont start or charge, is after the car has been in a crash the battery contacts open to disconnect the high voltage battery for safety. I need the EOS test to check the integrity of the battery to make sure when its reactivated it wont blow up or short out. I have everything disconnected right now while I send out the SRS to delete the crash data, but I should be able to see what state the battery is in thought ISTA, once I have it back. Has anyone here been able to get the EOS 12 digit code outside of the hardware at BMW?

The latest is, I was told that the HV system isnt locked. The new EME has to be reset in order to be coded to the vehicle. Thats proving to be quite the challenge. I have someone working on it. Im paying him. He's reset (virginized) an EME before so well see...

Hi,
Little sister of your I8, Bmw i3 Rex 2015 need help

Did you found a solution for your EME ?

Please let me know if you have an Idea what is the problem ?

Any help will be really appreciated

The Story :
The car was dead and dont know the reason , now I charged the HV battery, changed the main fuse (350a) was blown, changed the 12v battery and finally changed the KLE, the car works great now the only thing it stops charging after few secondes, it charge a bit then it stops and display Enable to charge on the main screen…when I scan I have two codes :

222834 Fault Codes Charge management function: Check Control message 804, unable to 222842 charge Charge management function: Fault during the charging procedure DTC

I am hesitating if the LIM is the problem ? or even the charging socket and wires ? the changes Kle is not good ?
I have no other code than the two mentioned above and the car runs perfectly and charges normally with the range extender, the only issue is the charging from the ccs charging port (110/220v)
Thank you very much,

The I8 will start and charge but not shift out of park. Common problem with the i3’s with used EME’s. Most fix it by swapping the main board but mine was damaged beyond repair. The EME was reset but still getting the EWS code 222CO2. “Electronic immobilizer expected response implausible.”
