As royhen99 says, the open source VCU you are looking for is ZombieVerter. This works great with Leaf hardware as well as some others.

Usually a hardware failure would cause an immediate trip, excessive load under current seems like a configuration issue.

As long as the motor is not spinning, and no throttle is applied (ideally in neutral) then it's safe to disconnect the HV.

You can turn off the HV first, or the HV and LV simultaneously.
